Pierce County CHW Workforce Assessment Survey 2023:
More CHWs, More Settings, Better Pay

The CHW workforce in Pierce County is growing. Our 2023 survey of more than 375 CHWs indicates there are:

  • More CHWs working in a broader range of organizations
  • More Organizations utilizing CHWs
  • Much larger percent of CHWs working in full time and paid positions
  • Earning higher hourly wages compared with responses to a similar survey conducted in 2019

The addition of oral health questions revealed that more than 35 percent of CHWs—like the people they serve—have unmet oral health needs.

Nearly half are involved in chronic disease self-management programs, and while they are better educated than respondents in 2019, the group wants more training to improve their skills in

  • Oral health
  • Diabetes
  • Cardiovascular disease
  • High blood pressure

Their job satisfaction rests on having institutional support, growth opportunities, and knowing they are making a difference.
